Minority in Parliament Calls for COCOBOD CEO Randy Abbey’s Dismissal

The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament is urging President John Dramani Mahama to remove Dr. Randy Abbey as CEO of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), citing his alleged incompetence and mismanagement of the cocoa sector. This call comes after the government announced a reduced cocoa producer price of GH¢41,392 per tonne, which the Minority argues will severely impact over a million cocoa farmers.

Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, stated that Abbey’s leadership has been marked by poor decisions, leading to a growing crisis in the cocoa sector. The Minority also warns that the reduced producer price may lead to protests from farmers, who are already struggling with rising costs and delayed payments.

A petition by the Good Governance Advocacy Group Ghana (GGAGG) also demands Abbey’s dismissal, citing “poor leadership choices, incompetence, arrogance, and financial mismanagement” at COCOBOD.
