By David Acquah – As parts of efforts to bring back life into the state owned transport company- Intercity State Transport Company (ISTC), is collaborating with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to establish a modern Vehicle Testing Centre on its premises.

The centre will run for 24 hours in order to ease the pressure at the various DVLA vehicle testing centres. The centre will see the testing of various vehicle sizes including tractors, trucks, trailers and all kinds of big vehicles and small ones.

During a working days visit to ISTC, the Hon. Minister for Transport, Hon. Fifi Kwetey reiterated his ministry’s commitment at ensuring that ISTC were pushed in the right direction. He lauded efforts by the leadership of the state owned transport company for their innovative steps with the aim of giving the once ailing company a lifeline and to also raise revenue from external sources such as the vehicle testing centre.

Vehicles at this centre will be issued approvals, confirmations and certificates after going through testing. Approval for using the vehicle in public transportation will be issued as evidence that standards and regulations defined by the constitution of Ghana and rules of the DVLA on dimensions, total weights and axle loads. It will also look at basic conditions that must be fulfilled by all devices and equipment of the vehicle in road traffic and by the rule books of our country for passenger and freight road vehicles tested for their road worthiness and evidence of standards.

According to the Managing Director of ISTC, Mr. Samuel Nuama-Donkor, the centre comes at an appropriate time when the company was looking to generate revenue from external sources. He said the completion of the project which is imminent will free up space at DVLA.
