The CEO of Vodafone Ghana, Yolanda Cuba, has disclosed that the dissatisfaction of telcos on the privacy of customers has contributed to the delay in the implementation of the Common Monitoring Platform(CMP).
Madam Cuba explained that her outfit has connected its systems but is still awaiting completion of all privacy concerns which is being worked at together with the National Communications Authority(NCA).
The roll out of the monitoring platform by Kelni GVG, has been met with stiff opposition from the telcos and some civil society groups.
Two separate lawsuits have been filed seeking clarity on the matter.
But speaking at a press briefing, Madam Cuba explained that Vodafone is not against the monitoring, but requires an upgrade in the privacy of the system through a filter to protect Ghanaians.
“We have connected our system to the platform but the implementation has not yet started. It is like a pipeline connected but no water is running through for now. We are demanding that the privacy issues are well addressed. We are not against the idea to monitor what we do,” she said.
Touching on the need to ensure that the privacy of consumers are protected, Madam Cuba stated that it is important for customers to be assured that their data is protected.
She maintained that it is also pertinent for telcos to have absolute confidence in the system to make the implementation successful.
Reacting to a question on the level of engagement between KelniGVG, the organization seeing to the implementation of the platform and telcos, Madam Yolanda disclosed that she has not had any opportunity to meet the company.
She however stated that it will be appropriate to meet the company since telcos are major stakeholders in the implementation process.
“I’ll love to meet them. As a CEO of Vodafone I’ve never met GVG. It’s important to meet them because I’ve a contract with you to serve you better. I’ve never met them one on one or even in a meeting. I don’t know the CEO of Kelni GVG and I’ve never met him,” she said.
