The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has entered a strategic partnership with Fidelity Bank Ghana to introduce a state-of-the-art Point-of-Sale (POS) system for Lotto Marketing Companies (LMCs). The milestone initiative is designed to reverse a nearly decade-long decline in the Authority’s POS channel by ditching obsolete 2G technology for modern digital infrastructure.
Formalized after a year of rigorous technical evaluations, commercial negotiations, and risk assessments, the overhaul brings several major operational changes aimed at modernizing the lottery experience.
A standout feature of the new system is a dramatic increase in the instant win payout limit. Winners can now receive up to GHS 30,000 directly through the POS channel, a significant jump from the previous GHS 1,200 cap.
Additionally, the partnership introduces a “payout discounting” option for high-tier winners. Rather than waiting for the NLA’s standard settlement cycle, players can now opt for immediate, full payment at the point of sale. Fidelity Bank will front these payouts directly, with the NLA reimbursing the bank over an agreed-upon period.
This technological leap is also a direct response to stiff competition from accredited Private Lotto Operators. Speaking at the launch, the NLA’s Director-General emphasized that regulatory measures alone are no longer sufficient to hold off market rivals. To thrive, the Authority must actively compete by offering superior technology, faster network speeds, and a vastly improved customer value proposition.
The modernization drive will see the nationwide phasing out of outdated manual keypad terminals, replacing them with current-generation equipment over the coming months. The launch event concluded with the formal signing of the agreement between the NLA and Fidelity Bank Ghana, paving the way for the rollout of the upgraded terminals and payment options to LMCs across the country.
