The Built Power Authority(BPA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with University of Ghana (UoG) to conduct feasibility studies for the construction of a 2.5 megawatt of solar farm.
The solar farm when completed will be tied into the National Interconnected Transmission System and will serve as a research center for students of the university.
Prof. Francis Dodoo, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development), who signed on behalf of the university, said he appreciate the partnership between the UoG and BPA and expressed appreciation to BPA.
He was optimistic that the project when completed, would complement and reduce power being used by the university.
Prof. Boateng Onwona Agyeman, Dean, School of Engineering Sciences, College of Basic and applied Sciences, in his remarks said the MoU was specifically to grant access to Bui Power Authority to conduct feasibility studies which will lead to the construction of a 2.5 megawatt solar farm for the University of Ghana.
He said that, at the end of the exercise, the reports of the feasibility studies which will include technical details of the proposed project, the scope of work that will be done, the design of the 2.5 megawatt solar farm, the implementation plan, and the financial model will be made available for the next phase to commence.
Mr. Fred Oware, Chief Executive Officer, Bui Power Authority who signed on behalf of BPA in his address said, discussions towards the commencement of the project took off about a year ago.
“We find it necessary to sign the MoU because we are now about to conduct the various studies needed to be done, before doing the actual project,” he said.
Mr. Oware noted that without the MoU, it was going to be impossible for the Authority to commit resources to the project and therefore lauded the efforts put in by university authorities in ensuring that an MoU was signed.
