The Deputy Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, Ebenezer Appah-Sampong, is hopeful that the government will soon adopt the use of e-mobility transport systems in the country.

According to him, this will help protect the environment since there will be less vehicular emissions produced by the use of fuel.

He was speaking to Citi Business News on the back of the launch of the first electric vehicle in Ghana; the Hyundai KONA subcompact medium SUV electric vehicle.

The car, which powers only on electricity, will save Ghanaians about 50 percent of money spent on purchasing fuel.

Mr. Appah-Sarpong says this is in line with government’s agenda in boosting the automobile industry.

“Already, the Ministry of Transport, together with other stakeholders was looking at an e-mobility transport system so some studies have already been done. But this launch also builds on the initiative and also assures that once you put in the various polices and regulations, the supply side is also there to meet the demand side of every policy requitement. So we are very excited about this.”

He continued, “Fortunately, this is happening at a time when government is promoting local production of vehicles so once we begin to embrace this, then that can feed into those activites by the autombile companies coming up in this countries to produce cars for our local market.”

Meanwhile, the General Manager and Head of Hyundai Brand in Ghana, Ganesh Phadale says the company will soon start conversations with the government to be able to normalise the use of these electric cars in the country.
