GCB Bank has overtaken Ecobank Ghana to become Ghana’s largest deposit-taking bank by market share, marking a significant shift in the country’s banking landscape.

The latest figures from PwC Ghana’s 2026 Banking Survey show that GCB Bank accounted for 12.37% of total industry deposits in 2025, ahead of Ecobank Ghana’s 10.52% and Stanbic Bank Ghana’s 7.80%.

The change is particularly notable because Ecobank Ghana held the top position in 2024, when it controlled 14.33% of industry deposits. GCB Bank was second at the time, with a 12.99% share.

The latest figures suggest that GCB has regained the leading position as competition among Ghana’s major banks intensifies.

The shift comes against the backdrop of strong growth in deposits across the banking sector. Total industry deposits increased by 25% in 2025 to GH¢334.3 billion.

Based on its 12.37% market share, GCB Bank held an estimated GH¢41.3 billion of the industry’s total deposits.

The figures underline the scale of the competition among Ghana’s banks, where attracting and retaining deposits remains central to expanding lending, growing customer relationships and strengthening overall market position.

GCB’s return to the top also signals a change in the balance of power among Ghana’s leading banks.

Ecobank Ghana, which had dominated the deposit market in 2024, has now moved into second place, while Stanbic Bank Ghana remains among the country’s three largest deposit-taking banks.

The latest ranking means GCB is back at the top of Ghana’s banking sector, with Ecobank now looking to close the gap.
