Ghana’s equities market sustained its strong upward momentum through August 2026, with a sharp increase in trading activity reinforcing growing investor participation in listed securities.

The benchmark Ghana Stock Exchange Composite Index (GSE-CI) gained 71.90% year-to-date, maintaining its strong performance and signalling broad-based appreciation in the value of listed equities.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also advanced significantly, recording a 70.09% year-to-date gain as financial-sector stocks continued to contribute to the overall strength of the market.

The positive market performance was accompanied by a major expansion in investor activity, with the number of transactions rising sharply during the period.

A total of 133,867 transactions were recorded, representing a 323.86% increase compared with the corresponding period last year.

The surge in transactions points to a significant increase in market participation as investors actively reposition their portfolios amid the strong performance of listed companies.

Trading value crosses GH¢210m

August alone recorded substantial activity on the exchange, with investors trading 50.99 million shares valued at GH¢210.73 million.

Compared with August 2025, share volume increased by 11.10%, while the value of transactions rose by 3.48%.

The combination of rising equity prices and stronger trading activity has kept the Ghana Stock Exchange firmly in positive territory, with investors continuing to show appetite for listed securities.

The performance of the financial stocks index also points to continued investor interest in the banking and financial services segment, which remains a major component of Ghana’s equities market.

The latest figures highlight a market experiencing both significant price appreciation and increased trading participation, strengthening the case for the Ghana Stock Exchange as an important avenue for investors seeking exposure to Ghanaian businesses.

With the benchmark index already up more than 70% for the year, market participants will be closely watching whether the strong momentum can be sustained through the remaining months of 2026.
