High above the Madina skyline, a team of engineers in reflective vests is laying the groundwork for a digital transformation. Telecel Ghana has officially kicked off a massive, nationwide network infrastructure expansion program, starting with a high-tech upgrade at its Social Welfare mast. The initiative is designed to deliver faster internet speeds, significantly increase capacity, and provide rock-solid reliability to millions of customers across the country.
This on-the-ground action in Madina is the physical manifestation of a promise made just months ago. In March, Telecel Ghana’s Chief Executive Officer, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, assured the public that major network infrastructure improvements would commence in the second quarter of the year. The company is now making good on that pledge.
Deploying Cutting-Edge Tech to Ease Congestion According to Ebenezer Siebu, Director of Technology at Telecel, the Madina site serves as the launching pad for a highly targeted capacity boost. The telecom operator is deploying newer, more advanced wireless technologies specifically designed to absorb heavy data traffic and eliminate congestion in the busiest corridors.
“We are building extra capacity on this site to reduce congestion and increase internet speeds for thousands of customers in Madina. As data usage continues to grow, these investments ensure our customers enjoy faster speeds, better voice quality and consistently stronger connection,” Mr. Siebu explained.
The scale of this modernization program is staggering. Over the course of this year, Telecel will roll out similar advanced technology upgrades across more than 100 high-traffic sites nationwide. Additionally, over 1,000 sites will undergo varying levels of enhancement as part of the broader network modernization strategy.
Prioritizing Safety Alongside Speed Even as the pace of work intensifies, Telecel is insisting that safety is not compromised. During the commencement of the Madina installation, the company’s Health and Safety team was actively on the ground. Safety officers closely monitored the engineers and contractors from Huawei, ensuring that strict operational standards were met and that safe work practices dictated every cable tightened and every antenna calibrated.
Real Impact for Everyday Users For the residents of Madina, the construction work on the telecommunications mast is a welcome sight, offering visible proof that their connectivity frustrations are being addressed.
Adiza, a nursing mother in the community, expressed her anticipation for the tangible benefits the upgrade will bring to her daily life. “I use Telecel every day to watch videos on social media so I am excited to see them improving the network here in Madina. I can’t wait,” she shared.
Building a Future-Ready Network Head of Networks, Anthony Sam, noted that these heavy investments transcend mere hardware deployment; they are about fulfilling the company’s core brand philosophy to connect energies and add value to communities.
“As we improve the network in communities across the country throughout this expansion drive, we are approaching our work with passion, commitment and purpose as always,” Mr. Sam stated.
This current drive is just the latest phase of what has become one of the industry’s most aggressive capacity enhancement programs. Since rebranding to Telecel Ghana, the telecom operator has massively scaled its physical footprint, growing from roughly 5,000 sites to an impressive 9,000 nationwide.
As engineers continue to upgrade equipment in Madina and beyond, Telecel Ghana’s latest investment drive signals a decisive push to build a robust, future-ready network capable of supporting the evolving digital demands of a rapidly growing subscriber base.
