The National Communications Authority (NCA) is set to remove the 5G exclusivity clause from Next-Gen Infraco’s (NGIC) licence, aiming to promote competition and innovation in the provision of 5G services. The proposed amendment, issued under Section 14 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), is expected to enhance consumer choice and service quality, accelerate nationwide digital transformation, and ensure optimal use of spectrum as a national resource.

The NCA’s move is in response to the need for increased competition and innovation in Ghana’s 5G market. NGIC, which has already installed 49 5G sites across the country, is currently in default of its licence fee instalment payment, a matter being addressed by the Authority.

The proposed amendment will take effect 90 days from the date of the notice, unless otherwise determined after considering representations from NGIC. The NCA assures the public that the process follows due procedure and aligns with its mandate to regulate communications services in Ghana’s national interest.
