Online shopping firm platform OLX has announced fresh measures to enhance the protection of consumers.

The firm’s country manager, Peter Ndiang’ui, said Monday the new policies would help check fraud.

“We intend to implement a new verification system for all users of the OLX platform that will require them to provide certain identification details,” Ndiang’ui told the Nation.

NEW CHECKS

The new checks would, however, not inhibit the free access for buyers and sellers who trade on the platform.

OLX’s growth has been steady in the past three months as e-commerce witnesses rapid adoption.

“We see a great deal of growth in the “new economy” enablers especially mobile phones as people keep switching from one device to another. Interestingly even the agriculture industry hasn’t been left behind. We see a huge growth in livestock and farm produce being sold over the OLX platform,” he said.

He projected that online shops and other e-retailers in the country will experience a surge in users in coming years as e-commerce fills the gaps left by physical retail.

SECURITY

In October last year, OLX announced a partnership titled ‘Kaa Ridhoo’ with the ICT Authority of Kenya and Consumer Federation of Kenya aimed at enhancing the security of buyers and sellers who use the platform.

“As we are not involved in the transactions between sellers and buyers, this campaign offers the perfect opportunity to reach a wider market,” added Ndiang’ui.
