Takoradi Market Circle to see a facelift: The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly has resolved to reconstruct the Takoradi market circle and Sekondi market to modern status.
The 100-year old markets have been put on Public, Private Partnership for redevelopment of which some companies including the Brazilian construction firm, Contracta, currently reconstructing the Kumasi Kejetia and central market projects, among others have expressed interest.
The market is expected to be redeveloped to the status of the Kumasi Kejetia and Central Market Redevelopment Project which is currently under construction.
This was disclosed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Anthony Kobina Kurentsir Sam, in an interaction with Adehye FM’s Elisha Adarkwah when he led a team of technical men to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to understudy the Kumasi Kejetia and Central Market Redevelopment Project and how the assembly succeeded in relocating the traders before construction.
The delegation was accompanied by a team from the KMA to tour the Kejetia and Central Market Redevelopment Projects and also the Kumasi racecourse where the traders were relocated.
“We in Sekondi-Takoradi have already put on PPP for redevelopment of the Takoradi market circle and Sekondi market…since we got to know that these people [contracta] are also undertaken the same project here, we found it very necessary to come here to understudy it”, Mr Sam said.
He said the Brazilian construction firm, contracta, has already “been there and have expressed interest of undertaken that projects”.
Mr Sam, said the status of the projects will be the same as the Kejetia and Central Market Redevelopment Project but “the size and the others may defer, because the culture and dynamics of Sekondi-Takoradi defers from that of the KMA”.
He commended KMA for the tremendous work done in reconstructing the Kejetia and the strategy used in relocating the traders.
He said they have gotten experience from the visit and will be meeting with the technical team, chiefs and other stakeholders on how to go about their own projects.
