On the path to success is often a period of struggle in which a person’s dream is close but has not yet arrived. Many give up during this time, others give up just before they succeed and a few have the determination to make their aspirations become a reality.

There’s a new force in the world of filmmaking named Brandon Washington. At the young age of 26, Washington has already made a name for himself in both online streaming and in advertising. Through his studio WriterBoy films, Washington has been able to release several films and is hoping to expand even further

Washington’s skills in this area began long before many of us were even thinking about our careers. From the young age of 12, he was already writing and directing his stories. Having already published his first book before 17 and following shortly after with his first film, Washington has proven that it is never too early to begin developing your creative style and committing to your craft. Going from starting out as an amateur storyteller to a studio founder and producer, Washington still maintains the independence that keeps his own work in his own hands, giving him the freedom to create and produce his art as he sees it.

This flies in the face of the path many young artists commit to when under pressure from the massive studios that exist in the film industry. But you’ll see no hesitation in his eyes when he describes the fact that he has no regrets in turning down the money for independence. This kind of freedom to create is characteristic of filmmakers like Tyler Perry and Spike Lee, two directors and producers that Washington very much considers his artistic inspirations. The struggle that lands a young artist in the back of their car for the night, or causes someone to have to sleep at their desk and maintain harsh work hours are things that he finds to be motivational. While this would probably dissuade many from pursuing this life, he invites the struggle and learns from the process. It’s been this same struggle that has developed his ability to tell stories with empathy and insight, and to produce films that speak to the desires to make dreams come to life that each of us has had.

The importance of mentorship is another common theme in his career. Washington identifies key relationships with several big names as being a catalyst for growth in his career. Having received many offers for funding his films that were far less than what was being offered to other artists, he found support for his projects from the artist Ray-J and several big names in the industry like Mikael Moore and Monkeypaw Productions’ own Jamal Watson. It’s also been in these connections and friendships that Washington has found his own desire to be an inspiration to young aspiring artists who are trying to make it past the resistance many find in the early stages of their career when they just need someone to take a chance on them and their process.

Washington continues to shatter expectations with a new film set to be released 2022. His latest film “Dream” is a deep dive into the life of a young boy struggling against all odds to make his dreams a reality. “Dreams” is set to be released on Fandango, Amazon Prime, and Hulu.
