Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, has ignited a crucial national debate, demanding that Ghana declare certain natural resources “sacred and untouched” to safeguard the nation’s ecological future.

Her impassioned plea comes amidst growing alarm over the relentless and often destructive exploitation of the country’s finite natural wealth.

Taking to her X (formerly Twitter) platform, the daughter of Ghana’s late, revered leader Jerry John Rawlings, questioned the insatiable appetite for resource extraction, highlighting the “irreparable damage” being inflicted on the environment for what she argues are often “short-term benefits… enjoyed by a few.”

The Price of “Progress”

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings minced no words, directly challenging the prevailing mindset that all of Ghana’s natural assets are merely commodities to be plundered.

“Is it every single, finite, natural resource that must be exploited?” she queried, adding pointedly, “Is the irreparable damage to the environment worth the short-term benefit that is often enjoyed by a few?”

Her comments resonate deeply with the widespread frustrations over Ghana’s escalating environmental crisis.

The nation has been grappling with the devastating consequences of rampant illegal mining (galamsey), aggressive deforestation, pervasive water pollution, and alarming biodiversity loss.

These destructive activities have not only decimated vital ecosystems but also imperiled livelihoods and public health, underscoring the desperate need for a unified national strategy for sustainable development.

Legacies, Not Just Assets

The Klottey Korle MP stressed that while economic growth is undoubtedly important, it cannot come at the ultimate cost of annihilating the very natural heritage that sustains communities and underpins all life.

“As a nation, should we not have a conversation about what we should leave sacred and untouched?” she urged, emphasizing a profound truth: “Our natural resources are not just economic assets; they are legacies for our children and the foundation of our ecological survival.”

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings’ powerful call to action implores policymakers, revered traditional leaders, environmental experts, and every Ghanaian citizen to unite.

Her mission: to mount a formidable defense of Ghana’s beleaguered forests, polluted rivers, diminishing mineral wealth, and endangered wildlife. She insists on the urgent need for stronger environmental regulations and a radical shift in national priorities towards long-term sustainability over fleeting gains.

This bold intervention from Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings throws down the gauntlet, demanding a nationwide reckoning with Ghana’s environmental stewardship. Will her call for a sacred pact with nature be heeded, or will the nation continue down a path of irreversible ecological degradation?
