Railway Ministry clears outstanding debts to revamp sector: Railway workers in Ghana have commended the railway ministry for settling all outstanding arrears owed them.
The workers confirmed to Citi Business News in an interview that all salaries owed them have been fully paid.
The railway workers had in the past embarked on several strike actions due to salary arrears.
But the Railway Minister, Joe Ghartey, last year (2017) announced a 35 percent increase in workers’ salary.
This is expected to take effect this month (January 2018).
In an interview with Citi Business News, General Secretary of the Ghana Railway Workers’ Union, Godwill Ntarmah said workers are motivated by the actions of the minister.
“This increase was done last year as a result of some negotiations that went on between the management and the union. Salaries of railway workers have been down for a long time. So gradually we are trying to do things that can lift up the salary to some appreciable level so the company itself is not doing so well because of the nature of the tracks and the railway in general. So it is a good start,” he said.
He added that “Increase of salaries will be a motivation to workers to increase their output. So we expect that with the sort of increase and the desire by the ministry to see to the sustenance of the railway, whatever increase that workers get in terms of salaries will motivate them to bring out their best”.
