The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU) has renewed its call for an end to unfair wages being paid by the multinational mining companies operating in the country.
According to a 2013 HAYS research report put together by HAYS Resources and Mining Global Salary Guide, which ranked 37 mining countries on locals/nationals and expatriates average annual salaries, Ghanaian locals/nationals only make 39,200 dollars compared with their expatriate counterparts’ of 152,100 dollars per year.
This represents 25.77% or a quarter of what the expatriates earn.
Speaking to Citi Business News on the latest development, the General Secretary of the Ghana Mines Workers Union, Prince William Ankrah said that mining giants must end the discrimination.
“We are saying that we should address the factual imbalances, anything that is unjust that has to be corrected. I do not think we are asking for too much it is a question at looking at what pertains now and how we can better it. We should get the dynamics very right our industry is not like the public sector these skills transcend national borders all we are saying that the remunerations mismatch must change,
“We are rather willing to accommodate the situation in a more gradualist perspective and that’s the way we intend going,”
