President John Mahama has said he has asked the major players in the transport and insurance sector to sit and agree on a resolution regarding the brouhaha around the hike in insurance premium for vehicles.
The National Insurance Commission is implementing a 500% increase in premiums for private and commercial vehicles, prompting protests from some transport operators who have threatened to stage a strike on Monday February 8, 2016.
But the President, cutting the sod for work to begin on the Kasoa Interchange Wednesday said he had directed the key players to iron out their differences.
“I’ve asked the Minister of Transport to call the National Insurance Commission, the GPRTU, and other stakeholders to sit down and have a discussion on the insurance premiums. And I’m sure that when that discussion happens everyone will leave there happy and there will be no problem,” President Mahama noted.
According to him, despite the accusing fingers being pointed at government for the increases, his administration has no hand in the determination of insurance premiums.
“Government is not responsible for setting insurance premiums; it is the insurance companies and the National Insurance Commission. So, if Insurance premiums have been increased, it was not done in consultation with government,” the president insisted.
