Jamestown Benefits from ‘Kalyppo Kares’ project

Over 500 Children in James Town, a suburb of Accra, have benefitted from Kalyppo Kares’ free preventive health screening exercise over the weekend.

The exercise, which was the third in a series of preventive health screening and education exercises scheduled to take place in specific locations in the Greater Accra region, saw the children being given education on self-breast examination, oral hygiene, care at the menstrual stage and education on other health related issues.

Speaking to Business Day on the exercise, Nii Akwei Bonsu, stool secretary for the Ngleshi –Alata traditional area, who lauded the idea, said they welcome such philanthropic gestures from corporate institutions.

“Jamestown is a densely populated area and as such we welcome such philanthropic gestures from corporate bodies and from the public. We believe that if these things are done, it will help the people to live healthy lives”, Nii Bonsu stated.

He explained that though Jamestown used to be a very vibrant town in the past, recent influx of people to the area has left the place congested with various health issues cropping up hence their joy and willingness to support Kalyppo’s move.

Chris Nana Ampadu, Project manager for Kalyppo Kares explained that with their products targeted towards children, the company strategically planned its corporate social responsibility program to benefit children in deprived areas in Accra.

“Looking at our target market, our efforts were to ensure that our corporate social responsibility, Kalyppo Kares for kids – which is a free health screening -, is geared towards children in the most deprived areas in the country using the 2010 population census as a point of reference. What we are currently working on is a pilot which will last four weeks. We have already visited Madina and Kwabenya, and today we are in Jamestown. Our last place will be in Tema. Depending on how the pilot goes, our heads have promised us that if it is successful, they will then move the project to other communities across the country for a one year period”, Mr. Ampadu said.

He stressed that though they had initially targeted to screen 200 children in the four locations in Greater Accra, the turn up for Madina (their first location) had been overwhelming with over 250 children registering. This, he said, prompted Kalyppo to increase the numbers from 200 to 500 children per community, for the remaining three areas.

The children, after their screening, received Kalyppo drinks and engaged in various entertainment activities including bouncy castles, dancing competition, musical chairs, face painting and other fun activities.

The exercise was held at the Jamestown Mantse Agbonaa Park from 9am to 5pm and saw a lot of children benefit from the project.

The pilot project, which is in two parts, comprises the health screening and talk section and entertainment section which entails bouncy castle, musical chairs, face painting among other activities with a lot of prizes and giveaways.

Tema Community 1, the last on the list of locations to benefit from Kalyppo Kares, is slated for 5th September 2015 at the Tema Twedeease Basic School Park, behind TMA.

Kalyppo is the flagship natural fruit juice brand from Aquafresh Limited. Aquafresh Limited is a manufacturer and marketer of packaged food products and non-alcoholic beverages in Ghana.

The Kalyppo brand launched in 1998 is for children of all ages, but especially for those aged 4 -16 years old. Kalyppo has no added preservatives.
