GREDA calls for central authority to handle sale of lands: The Executive Secretary of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA) Sammy Amegayibor, has called for the establishment of a central authority to control the sale of lands in Ghana.
This according to him, the move will lead to a reduction in the cases of land litigation in the country.
The Lands Commission in December 2017, introduced a new land documentation system, the Ghana Enterprise Lands Information System (GELIS) to fast track the acquisition of land titles by using electronic platforms.
The move is also geared at reducing the turnaround time for land registration to one month from the four months, presently.
The program is to be piloted in five regions by February 2018.
Mr. Amegayibor in an interview with Citi Business News explained that the establishment of a central authority to control the sale of lands in Ghana will help sanitize the system.
“The relevant authorities are trying their best to improve the land registration system but are having difficulties. My personal opinion is that I don’t think the scattered ownership of lands in Ghana is going to help anybody”.
“Government, stools as well as individuals own lands in the Country. If every land is managed in the name of the state by an authority it will go a long way to help,” he stressed.
He pointed out that the proposed authority will not take over the ownership of the land but rather be in charge of the administration of lands.
“This entity will be solely responsible for registering all lands as well as selling all lands. This means that if an individual wants to sell his/her land to another person, they would have to notify the established authority to carry out the sale.”
