Africa is already facing more severe climate change challenges than most other parts of the world, despite bearing the least responsibility for the problem. With nearly one-fifth of the world’s population today, Africa accounts for less than 3% of the world’s energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to date and has the lowest emissions per capita of any region. Africans are already disproportionately experiencing the negative effects of climate change, including water stress, reduced food production, increased frequency of extreme weather events and lower economic growth – all of which are fueling mass migration and regional instability. For all of these difficulties. The question is, does the current global clean energy transition debate hold any promise for Africa’s socio – economic development? This and many more are the issues the roundtable will x – ray.
The vision, courage, passion and determination of some of the managers of the energy companies have demonstrated in the face of daunting, harsh business climate make the ECOWAS Energy Award all the more compelling. This event presents a unique opportunity to profile, critically review, analyze and consider the efforts and contributions of the individuals and corporate leaders in other to recognize, reward and celebrate them.
The ECOWAS Energy Roundtable and Award, is created to provide a platform for elevated engagement for players, policy makers in government and investors alike in the sub – region’s energy sector. The award event would recognize, reward and celebrate organisations, institutions and individuals that are contributing to the innovation, achievements, progressive and inspirational changes taking place within the sector and the general economy of Africa especially in the ECOWAS community.
Similarly, the award will focus on five broad areas, namely, Oil & Gas, Power – generation, transmission and distribution, renewable energy, regulatory and personality. Excluding the personality broad area, the other four broad areas will feature 6 categories each, namely: the ECOWAS Energy Company of the Year, ECOWAS Energy CEO of the Year, ECOWAS Most Innovative Energy Company of the Year, ECOWAS Fastest Growing Energy Company of the Year, ECOWAS Sustainability Energy Company of the Year and ECOWAS Energy Regulator of the Year.
On the other hand, the Roundtable session of the event will feature keynote presentation and a panel discussion that will focus on the concerted actions, policies, partnerships, collaborations and funding required to accelerate, scale – up cheap and clean energy in the ECOWAS sub region and how it helps in the economic growth, development and quality of life of the population. The keynote will be delivered by a subject matter expert from one of Africa’s leading professional services firms.
To arrive at the nominees list, The Award Committee employed a mix of qualitative and quantitative parameters to select the nominees for different categories of award. These include level of investment in exploration and development activities (Seismic activity, number rig count, well drilled, local content compliance, business expansion (new technologies), additional job created, improvement in the product quality, reduction in cost and increase profitability, performance in employee welfare, cases of fatality reported, first aid administration, medical treatment incident, restriction work incident, lost time injury frequency, lost time injury, total recordable incident rate, percentage of gas flared over total production, volume of oil spill, number of cases of oil spill remedied, new investment in retails outlet and tank farm, ratio of indigenous to foreign contractors engaged, human capacity development initiative, sponsorship and partnerships among others.
