Multichoice Ghana operator of pay TV service DStv in Ghana warns the public of the sale of illegal DStv decoders purportedly sourced from Nigeria on sale in Ghana. According to Cecil Sunkwa Mills, General Manager, Multichoice Ghana, “we have not authorized the importation and sale of DStv decoders from Nigeria and warns persons who procure these illegally imported decoder, do so at their own risk. Adding that the National Communications Authority is the only body that approves all decoder imports into Ghana”.

He confirmed that Multichoice Ghana is aware of the current developments where phony DStv agents sell pre-registered decoders from Nigeria and conduct transactions on behalf of these unsuspecting customers in Ghana as Nigerian subscribers.

Mr. Sunkwa Mills added, these illegal decoders are being sold by unauthorized persons who smuggle them into the country, flouting various laws and denying the Government of Ghana the requisite tax revenue by way of import duties on the decoders. Furthermore the subscription collected by the smugglers from persons who buy these illegal decoders do not attract the necessary taxes of CST and VAT/NHIL which forms a significant component of the legitimate subscription paid officially here in Ghana.

“This practice is dangerous and injurious to the economy of Ghana” said Cecil Sunkwa-Mills and called on the Ghana Police, Customs Excise and Prevention Service and other security agencies to assist in abating this illegal activity to protect the viability of the Ghanaian economy.

In a related development Multichoice Ghana in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service in the past week have raided shops in Kaneshie, Cape Coast, Sunyani, Kumasi, Takoradi and South La Estates in Accra where over two thousand decoders pre-registered in Nigeria were seized. Ledgers with over one thousand accounts was picked up and these accounts would be disconnected after they have been verified as not properly acquired decoders from Multichoice Ghana.

Cecil Sunkwa-Mills urged all persons interested in acquiring a DStv decoder to contact the nearest DStv office in (Abelenkpe – Accra, Tema, Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale) or our accredited dealers countrywide for assistance. He said if one was in doubt to call 0302740540 to be assigned an accredited dealer and certified installer.
