Ghanaians would start experiencing some ease in charges for electricity consumption from July 1, President John Dramani Mahama has hinted.
According to Mr Mahama, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will implement a new billing cycle, which would address concerns of overbilling.
There have been astronomical increases in electricity tariffs in recent times. The situation forced some residents of La, Teshie, and Nungua to hit the streets on Tuesday June 21, to demonstrate against the “abnormal” hike.
But addressing market women in Madina on the same day during his Accounting to the People Tour of the Greater Accra Region, the president said he had given ECG the go-ahead to implement solutions to resolve the issues of overbilling.
“Because the electricity billing is done in monthly cycles, they have to start on the first of a month with the billing cycle. So I have asked Ghanaians to exercise patience, from 1 July they would start the new billing cycle and I’m sure that a lot of us will see some relief in the electricity bills”, he stated.
Mr Mahama explained that the hike in electricity was because the water levels in the hydroelectric dams were low, adding that the sources of power produced currently were gas and crude oil, which were more expensive options to hydroelectricity.
“But we are praying that this year the rains would be good so that the dams would recover. As we put in cheaper hydro power we will adjust the tariff to reflect the cheaper power we are getting,” he added.
