The Bank of Ghana is seeking feedback on a proposed rule that would require banks to hold sufficient high-quality liquid assets to withstand a 30-day period of financial stress.
The draft Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) directive is intended to help lenders meet short-term obligations and manage sudden cash outflows. The central bank has opened the proposal for consultation before it is finalised.
Banks and other stakeholders have until November 30, 2026, to submit comments to bsdletters@bog.gov.gh. The BoG says it will consider material submissions and explain how they were addressed, including whether they informed the final directive.
The proposal is part of wider efforts to strengthen banks’ risk management. A separate Credit Risk Management Directive would cover the lending process, from loan origination and monitoring to measurement and recovery. The impact of the liquidity rules on banks’ operations will depend on the final requirements.
