Thousands of workers in Ghana are hitting the streets today in protest of the recent hikes in petroleum products and utility tariffs.
The Trades Union Congress wants the Mahama-led administration to withdraw the recently introduced Energy Sector Levy.
Several meetings between the government and the Labour unions to address the issue ended inconclusively as government insists it is impossible to withdraw the levies.
It argues the levies are meant to fix the challenges in the energy sector. But labour says the move is insensitive on the part of the Mahama administration. They have threatened to strike if their two-day demonstration does not get government to soften its stance.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the TUC has warned political parties to stay away from their demonstration.
