The government has approved a new temporary intervention to cushion consumers against rising diesel prices, effective May 16, 2026, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced.

Following a cabinet meeting chaired by President John Dramani Mahama, the government decided to absorb GHS1.07 per litre on diesel.

The measure will run for two pricing windows and is subject to review.

The move replaces an earlier intervention that took effect on April 16, 2026. Under that measure, government absorbed GHS2.00 per litre* on diesel and GHS0.36 per litre on petrol for one month, ending May 15, 2026.

That intervention was introduced to shield consumers from rising global fuel prices driven by geopolitical tensions.

According to the ministry, the latest decision is necessary to ensure the sustainable distribution of petroleum products nationwide while continuing to provide relief to consumers.

The announcement was signed by Richmond Rockson, Esq., Spokesperson and Head of Communication at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.
