
President John Mahama has unveiled plans to revamp Ghana’s mining industry, shifting focus from raw mineral exports to value-added production. Speaking at the Local Content Summit 2026, he emphasized the need for Ghana to move up the extractive value chain, citing examples from Botswana, Chile, and Indonesia.
Mahama outlined key strategies, including:
- Transforming local content from procurement to partnerships
- Reviewing mining legislation to promote Ghanaian enterprises
- Eliminating raw ore exports within five years
- Developing human capital through skills training and innovation
- Positioning Ghana as a tech-driven mining hub
The summit, organized by the Minerals Commission, aims to promote responsible mining practices and management. Chief Executive Isaac Andrews Tandoh warned against fronting for foreign businesses and announced plans for a new royalty regime.
Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson stressed the importance of local content in fighting illegal mining, while Nana Kobina Nketsia V, President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, called for people-centred reforms to ensure community benefits.
The summit seeks to create a platform for stakeholders to rally around sustainable mining practices and promote indigenous participation.
