The Ghana Gold Board has opened applications for new licences covering gold jewellery fabrication and refining, as part of a broader effort to formalise and strengthen regulation of the country’s gold value chain.

The move, which takes effect from Tuesday, 22 October 2025, allows individuals and companies to apply for Jewellery and Fabrication Licences in Categories A, B, and C, as well as Refinery Licences. The initiative follows the passage of the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), which gives the Board full authority over licensing and supervision of gold-related businesses.

According to a statement from the Board, all persons and companies involved in gold trading, jewellery manufacturing, fabrication, or refining must now hold valid licences issued under the new law. Existing licences issued by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources are no longer valid.

The Gold Board has set 31 December 2025 as the final deadline for businesses to regularise their operations. After this date, operating without a valid GoldBod licence will be considered a criminal offence.

Applications are to be submitted exclusively through the official website, www.goldbod.gov.gh. Manual submissions will not be accepted. Applicants are required to review eligibility requirements, documentation checklists, and fee schedules before submission.

The new licensing framework provides four categories:

Category A – for Ghanaian sole proprietors and small-scale jewellers producing for local sale.

Category B – for fully Ghanaian-owned medium-sized manufacturers producing for local and export markets

Category C – for large-scale local and foreign companies engaged in jewellery and casting production.

Refinery Licence – for entities seeking to operate gold refineries in Ghana.

Applicants must create an account on the GoldBod website, complete the required forms, upload supporting documents such as business registration and tax clearances, and pay fees through approved online channels. Updates on application status and interview schedules will be sent via email.

The Ghana Gold Board says the licensing exercise is a key part of its mission to ensure compliance, promote transparency, and support sustainable growth within Ghana’s gold sector.
