The Ministry of employment and labour relations has described the growing unemployment situation in the country as a crisis and a national security threat.
Unemployment Rate in Ghana averaged 8.82 percent from 2001 until 2013, reaching an all time high of 12.9 percent in 2005 according to figures from the Ghana Statistical Service.
“We are in a crisis, a crisis of growing unemployment in our country , a crisis which is informed by continuing gaps in skills development and a crisis that we are not taking urgent steps to address.
But for us in Ghana we don’t want an Arab spring”, Minister of employment and labour relations Haruna Iddrissu stressed.
Delivering the key note address at the Intra-Africa Talent Mobility Partnership/Labour Market Information Workshop, the Labour Minister called for partnership between government and the private sector to address the situation.
“To avoid an Arab spring will require that both the public and private sector together with our friendly donors see the growing unemployment in the country as a national security threat and crisis which need to be address and addressed head on and sufficiently in time”, he further stated.
The Ministry is also calling on donor partners to assist the country develop the national labour market information system to help accelerate Ghana’s developmental agenda.
