The Cup of Nations 2019 hosted by Egypt came to conclusion a few weeks ago. The tournament was not without a few surprises. The tournament’s biggest surprise must be our neighboring island in the east Madagascar. The country went past the group stages to reach the quarter finals, the best in the country’s football history.  Another surprise is our very own Black Stars which did not get past the round of 16 teams. The event showcased African football at it greatest and showed the sport is definitely alive and kicking.

Football sponsorship at a grass route level is imperative for the development of the sport. Betway has been on the forefront of football development in Africa. The company is devoted to growing sport in all sectors. In 2016 Betway organised a coaching clinic that was hosted by a few international coaches.  2019 saw the third edition of the Betway Talent Search in Ghana. The talent search initiative is for young football players from across the country to show case their talent and get into the professional realm of football. Stephen Appiah leads the charge and is the head coach of eight coaches that scout the country looking for upcoming talent. The country was divided into two zones with two teams coming from each zone. The final four teams will square off in tournament in Accra on the 3rd of August. This will give the aspiring football players the change to show their talent and gusto.

Not everyone can be a football players and Betway recently launched initiative for innovation in the financial services sector. The Betway Fintech Challenge was open to all Ghanaians over the age of 18. Developers and innovators had to come up with innovations in the following categories; blockchain solutions, customer connection and experience innovation, investment & wealth management and also data-driven design. Ten start-ups made it to the final and where all given training and attended workshops to help grow their business. The winner of the challenge was start-up company Kwidex. The company uses crowdfunding to help people invest in agriculture. The company walked away with the main prize of GHS20,000 to help grow the business.
