McDan grows 5,000-acre tomato farm in N/R

The Chief Executive Officer of the McDan Group of Companies, Dr Daniel Mckorley has hinted at investing in the agricultural sector to boost tomato production in the Northern Region.

Speaking to journalists in Tamale after paying a courtesy call on the Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Salifu Saeed, Dr Mckorley, who is also the Dakpema Gub-gbaa Naa (Unity Chief) said he was convinced that the move will help provide adequate job opportunities to the unemployed youth in the region and also enhance the Ghanaian economy.

“We started tomato production, very soon you will see it. We want to stop the importation of tomatoes into the country and to create jobs and by the first year, it will be good,” he stated.

According to Dr Mckorley, about 5,000 acres of tomato farm will be used to start the project, which will provide employment for 500 women farmers.

He indicated that the McDan Group of Companies is also aiming at projects that will take people off the streets to engage them in meaningful ventures in the region.

He revealed that the McDan Foundation is establishing an endowment fund to eradication under-tree schools in the Northern Region.

“We will be building one school in Yendi for the Ya Na as part of efforts to improve education,” Dr Mckorley reiterated.

He also said the foundation will launch an amateur boxing competition in Tamale to unearth talents in the area, adding: “My aim is to see the youth in this region grow in a positive manner.”

The regional minister commended the McDan Group for its intervention in the north and urged other entities in the private sector to invest in that part of Ghana.

He said there are a lot of potentials in the region.
