The Transport Operators Association of Ghana has officially endorsed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto, declaring it the most favourable for the transport sector ahead of the upcoming elections.

In a comprehensive review of the major political parties’ manifestos, the Association, which represents commercial drivers across the country, found the NDC’s proposals to be the most aligned with the needs of drivers and the broader transport industry.

Key reasons for this endorsement include the NDC’s ambitious plans for infrastructure development. “The NDC manifesto outlines an ambitious plan to enhance road infrastructure across the country,” the press release stated.

This includes the expansion and maintenance of major highways, feeder roads, and urban roads, which are crucial for reducing traffic congestion and ensuring safer travel.

Fuel price regulation is another significant factor. The NDC has pledged to stabilise fuel prices, a major concern for commercial drivers affected by fluctuating fuel costs.

The manifesto also emphasises modernisation in the transport sector. This includes digital payment systems, fleet renewal programmes, and new transport hubs.

Additionally, there is a focus on improving driver welfare through affordable healthcare, pension schemes, and insurance coverage.

“The NDC has promised to implement policies aimed at improving the welfare of drivers,” the Association highlighted.

Environmental considerations are also part of the NDC’s agenda, promoting the use of eco-friendly vehicles and phasing out older, high-emission models.

The manifesto proposes a partnership between the GPRTU and local assemblies or private investors to modernise terminals on a revenue-sharing basis.

In contrast, the Association found that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) manifesto lacked depth in addressing these critical issues.

“While highlighting ongoing infrastructure projects, the NPP’s proposals do not offer concrete solutions for fuel price stabilisation or transport modernisation,” the statement added.

The Transport Operators Association is, therefore, urging its members and the public to consider the future of the transport sector when voting, asserting that the NDC’s detailed and actionable plans represent the best path forward for the industry.
