Through this new identification campaign, MTN Cameroon is seeking to fully comply with the legal provisions on identification in Cameroon.

As a matter of fact, since 3 September 2015, a Prime Ministerial Order gives new guidelines to mobile telephony operators with regard to the procedure on identifying their subscribers.

MTN Cameroon said its subscribers can freely verify the conformity of their previous identification with the new exigencies stipulated by the Government by sending “status” by SMS to 8758.

The telecom giant said in case the return SMS indicates that the identification is incomplete, the subscriber needs to re-register their SIM to avoid the suspension of their number from the network, come 1 July 2016.

The new identification campaign, according to MTN, shall witness an unparalleled deployment by MTN nationwide.

It said subscribers can have their SIMs identified by MTN Cameroon employees, equipped with specific mobile equipment, who shall ply the streets of towns and villages to identify subscribers quickly.

The identification process developed by MTN Cameroon over the last months warrants the exercise to last between 60 and 90 seconds per subscriber.

MTN Cameroon has invited its subscribers to respond massively to this new identification campaign, and contribute towards achieving the national mandatory objective to secure goods and persons in Cameroon.
