Ghanaian President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has attributed Ghana’s increasing employment woes to the country’s educational system which he says does not emphasize self-employment.

He made this statement at the launch of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s (MOFA) Ghana Agricultural Sector Investment Program (GASIP) held at the Physicians and Surgeons College in Accra.

“Mr. chairman, the unemployment problem we have on hand today stems from the fact that our educational system in the past and even today, does not emphasize self-employment after school”, president Mahama said.

In a speech read on his behalf by the minister for food and agriculture, honourable Fiifi Kwetey, President Mahama stressed that the country’s high unemployment case “would be history” if the mindset of young graduates shifted from gaining employment in the public sector to self-employment.

He further explained that agriculture held the best prospects for the concept of self-employment hence the government’s provision of various funding and other support policies as well as support for the GASIP initiative.

President Mahama added his voice to the Food and Agric ministry’s efforts in seeking the needed co-financing saying the GASIP initiative required a bigger envelope for maximum impact on the ground.

Ghana Agriculture Sector Investment Programme (GASIP) is a sector wide national framework designed to support agri-business development in Ghana. It is a programme of the Government of Ghana supported by the International Fund for Agric Development (IFAD) and implemented by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA).
