The Union of African Shippers’ Councils (UASC) will be meeting in Accra from January 27-29 to assess its performance for the past two years and set new targets for the next two years.
One of the major topics that will be discussed during the 10th Union of African Shippers’ Councils, will be the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) requirements regarding the verification of the gross mass of packed containers.
Effective July 1st this year, all packed containers are required to have a verified gross weight declared by shippers. The move is to check overweight containers that cause accident on the sea.
The Union of African Shippers’ Councils (UASC) is made up of 18 member Shippers Organizations in the West and Central African sub-region and headquartered in Douala, Cameroun.
It is one of the organs of the Maritime Organization for West and Central Africa (MOWCA) and also a member of the Global Shippers’ Forum, which is the world’s leading trade association for shippers engaged in international trade and moving goods by all modes of transport.
The Ghana Shippers Authority said it will spend a lot of time in the first quarter of this year educating shippers on the verified gross weight convention to prevent goods from being rejected at the ports.
