In a historic move to deepen ties between Africa and the Caribbean, the Government of Barbados has announced direct flights between Accra, Ghana, and Bridgetown, Barbados. This development, which comes as part of a broader effort to enhance tourism, cultural exchange, and economic collaboration between the two regions, is expected to commence in November 2024.

During a flag-raising ceremony held at Government Headquarters in Bridgetown to mark the third annual Africa-CARICOM Day, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kerrie Symmonds confirmed that the structured chartered flights will take place on November 10 and November 19. The initiative, according to Symmonds, aims to eliminate the middle-man routes that currently require travelers to transit through North America or Europe, allowing direct access between the two regions.

For both Ghana and Barbados, this is an important step forward in fostering deeper ties. Symmonds emphasized that the timing of the flights was deliberately chosen to align with Barbados’ Independence Day celebrations, giving Ghanaian tourists the opportunity to experience the rich culture and heritage of Barbados during this significant period.

“This will ensure that in the month we celebrate our independence, we will have Ghanaian tourists flying directly here with a view of sharing in our independence festivities and immersing themselves in our authentic Barbadian tourism experience,” Symmonds noted.

This connection opens up a range of possibilities for Ghanaians and Barbadians alike. Ghanaian visitors will be able to enjoy Barbados’ world-class beaches, vibrant cultural festivals, and historic landmarks, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed capital, Bridgetown. Barbados’ dynamic culinary scene and rich rum-making history will also provide unique experiences for African visitors.

Expanding Beyond Tourism

While tourism will likely be a key driver for the flights, the benefits extend beyond leisure travel. Both governments are keen to leverage this direct route to facilitate stronger trade and economic partnerships. With ongoing discussions about increasing air connectivity between Africa and the Caribbean, the Barbados-Ghana flights will serve as a blueprint for future collaborations, not only between these two nations but also across the wider African and Caribbean regions.

Last year, Barbados’ Ambassador to CARICOM, David Comissiong, mentioned that

discussions with Air Peace, a Nigerian airline, are in advanced stages, aiming to establish direct flights between Lagos and Bridgetown. Although these flights have yet to commence, there is optimism that initiatives like the Ghana-Barbados flights will set a precedent, encouraging other African nations to explore direct connections with the Caribbean.

A Whole New Chapter for Africa-Caribbean Relations

This development comes against the backdrop of increasing cooperation between Africa and CARICOM nations, with countries like Ghana playing a leading role in strengthening these relationships.

This direct route opens a gateway for not only tourism but also greater collaboration in areas such as trade, agriculture, and education. Both Ghana and Barbados have the opportunity to benefit from shared resources and skills as they work toward mutual growth and prosperity.

As Africa continues to make strides toward more integrated global partnerships, the establishment of direct flights with Barbados marks a new chapter in relations between Ghana and the Caribbean, reinforcing the role of travel as a key facilitator for development.
