Agricultural Consultant, Ken Nii Addy, says the application of technology in agriculture is necessary if Ghana is to be able to boost its production to meet demand.
According to him, technology helps in ensuring accuracy and reduce some losses farmers are exposed to.
Though Mr. Addy admits that technology has the potential to reduce labour, he believes the excess labour could be diverted to other ventures to grow Ghana’s agric sector.
Ken Nii Addy made the remarks on the on-air series of the Citi Business Festival which continues this [Monday] morning, June 15, 2020.
“Today, fortunately we are talking about hybrids. Formerly we didn’t have them. Fortunately, I haven’t heard of any GMO entry in the country at the moment, but then hybrids are doing well with us even to the extent that irrigation is coming up which could be developed better. The onus rests on us especially to even run proper tests on our soils and use them for production. As of now, the drone technology which is actually all over the world has come into our country, it has come to stay with us. We have drones which are aiding in correct measurement or dimensions of farms. They are aiding in detecting pest and diseases and they are being used for spraying chemicals across,” he said.
