Ghana’s second Karpowership is expected to arrive in the country by September 2016, officials from Karpowership Company Limited have announced.

The second power barge from Turkey is expected to generate 225Megawatts of power, which could be expanded to 450Megawatts to augment energy generation in the country.

A three-year energy crisis, locally termed ‘dumsor’ led to a load shedding regime, which resulted in the closure of businesses, job losses, and other difficulties.

The government proceeded to sign an agreement with the company to provide some 450Megawatts of power.

The first barge, currently in operation with a capacity of 225Megawatts, arrived in November 2015. With power from additional energy production units, the power supply in the country has improved.

The Executive Director of business at Karpowership Company Limited, Zeynep Harezi, said: “The second Karpowership is 70% complete and will be delivered in the second half of 2016 in accordance with contractual obligations.”
