Obeng Yaw, a community in the Upper West Akyem district of the Eastern region is the latest to benefit from Tigo’s Shelter for Education project. The community has received a six unit classroom block, this replaces their old school building which has seen no major renovation since it was constructed in the 1980s.
Additionally Tigo has also constructed a staff common room, a Headmaster’s office and toilet facilities.
At a short ceremony in Obeng Yaw, the Headmaster, pupils and entire community gathered at the forecourt of the new school building to officially receive the keys to the school from Tigo.
The CEO for Tigo, Roshi Motman, said Tigo’s ‘Shelter 4 Education’ initiative is aimed at providing good infrastructure for quality teaching and learning in rural Ghana.
“Education is key in nation building and as a brand we want to contribute in shaping the lives of these children who in future will build Ghana. By providing both the pupils and teachers with a conducive learning environment they can concentrate on their studies”, she said.
The Chief of the community, Nana Obeng Yaw II, lauded Tigo for the initiative and pledged to ensure the new building is well maintained for the benefit of the children in the community.
Shelter 4 Education is Tigo’s new CSR initiative – the company is putting up a six unit classroom block with headmaster’s office, staff common room and toilet facilities for some selected schools in makeshift structures across Ghana. Some run-down schools will also be renovated. All the selected schools will be furnished with tables and chairs, school uniform and books for the pupils.
