September inflation increases marginally to 17.4%

    The Consumer Price Inflation rate which measures the average rise in the prices of all consumer goods and services in the country for September 2015 was 17.4 percent.

    This means that, the change in the general price level was 17.4 percent over the one year period, from September 2014 to September 2015.

    The year-on-year inflation rate for August 2015 was 17.3 percent, while the monthly change rate for September 2015 was -0.1 percent.

    By this, the general price level went down by 0.1percent between August 2015 and September 2015, while the monthly change rate recorded for August 2015 was -0.7 percent.

    Announcing the figures in Accra, the Government Statistician, Dr Philomena Nyarko explained that the food inflation rate for September 2015 was 7.8 percent, compared with 7.7 percent recorded in August 2015.

    She pointed out that the “price driver” for the food inflation rate was Vegetables, which recorded 13.6 percent

    “The non-food inflation rate for September 2015 was 23.2%, compared with 23.4 percent recorded in August 2015, she said”.

    “The main “price drivers” for the non-food inflation rate were Education (29.6%), Recreation and culture (27.0%), Clothing and Footwear (24.9%), Transport (23.8%), Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (23.6%) and Furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance (23.4%)”, she added.

    She stated that the inflation rate for imported items was 17.4 percent in September 2015, compared with 18.1 percent recorded in August 2015, while the inflation rate for locally produced items was 17.3 percent in September 2015, compared with 17.0 percent recorded in August 2015.

    The Upper West, Ashanti, Greater Accra and Central regions recorded inflation rates higher than the national average of 17.4 percent.

    The Brong Ahafo Region recorded the same inflation rate as the national average of 17.4 percent.

    The Upper West Region recorded the highest year-on-year inflation rate of 18.6 percent, while the Upper East Region recorded the lowest at 13.6 percent.
